1. Lemonade

Lemonade is one of the best summer drinks and can also help with diarrhea and loose stool. Ayurvedic expert Dr Dimple Jangda says, “Packed with high vitamin C content, this drink helps balance the pH levels in the gut.” Additionally, the citric acid in lemons may help to kill off harmful bacteria that could be causing diarrhoea.

Here’s how to prepare it: Squeeze one lemon to extract its juice in a glass of water. Add a teaspoon of honey for sweetness if you want. Stir well and drink it slowly.

Coconut water

Coconut water is known to help with digestive issues. As a natural source of electrolytes, such as potassium and sodium, it can effectively treat dehydration caused by diarrhoea and rehydrate your body. It also contains antioxidants that are great for your digestive system.

Here’s how to prepare it: Simply crack open a fresh coconut and pour the water into a glass. Add a pinch of salt for added electrolytes. You may also add a few ice cubes to consume it chilled for the best results.

3. Banana smoothie

Bananas are easy to digest and are rich in potassium, essential vitamins, and fibre, which is often depleted during diarrhoea. “Bananas can help replenish these essential nutrients and reduce stress on your digestive system,” explains Dr Jangda. Additionally, bananas contain pectin, a soluble fibre that can help absorb excess water in the intestines and help bulk up stool, improving bowel movements.

Here’s how to prepare it: Blend one ripe banana with a cup of milk or yoghurt. Add a tablespoon of honey for sweetness, if you want it, add a pinch of cinnamon for flavour. Blend until smooth and enjoy.

4. Buttermilk

Buttermilk is one of the most effective home remedies for diarrhea. It is rich in probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy gut microbiome. It also contains electrolytes such as potassium and calcium, which can help replenish those lost during diarrhoea. Ensure you are not lactose intolerant, as consuming yoghurt or curd can worsen diarrhoea and Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms in such cases.

Here’s how to prepare it: Mix one part yoghurt with three parts water. Add a pinch of salt, chopped mint leaves, or coriander for added flavour, and stir well. Serve it chilled.

Rice water

Rice water is a traditional remedy for diarrhoea that has been used for centuries. “It is rich in starch, which can help bind loose stool and provide a soothing effect on the digestive tract. It can help rehydrate and reduce the number of times of poop,” says Dr Jangda.

Here’s how to prepare it: Rinse half a cup of rice in cold water. Boil the rice in four cups of water until it becomes soft and mushy. Strain the rice, reserving the water. Let the rice water cool to room temperature. Add a pinch of salt, and drink.

Keep your body well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water, electrolyte solutions, and clear broths to prevent dehydration.
2. Practise good hygiene. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after meals, and after using the bathroom.
3. Consume easily digestible foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce, boiled potatoes, etc.
4. Rest and avoid any strenuous activities to allow your body to recover.
5. Take probiotics to help restore healthy gut bacteria and improve digestion.
